***** A fascinating work. The entire book is an adventure of exploration, taking readers into mining, the sea, war, natural history via birds, the world of work, travel (to India), age and ageing, science, and the nature of evil. Each chapter takes the same journey through its subject matter, encouraging both close examination and a wider approach. Lucky the student who finds it on his or her reading list; lucky the teachers who find themselves teaching it, as I'm sure they, like me, will find themselves challenged and rewarded.

Sarah, Parents in Touch - 10 Dec 2010
This is the first in a new series from Galore Park. It aims to introduce students to the wonderful range of English language available. Each section contains a series of excerpts of different genres of writing, linked by a common theme. This use of different forms of writing will draw in the student and ensure that there is something to appeal to everyone. Fiction and non-fiction are included, under sections such as Eureka; the World at Work and Behind Bars. As well as questions based on the passages, there are a wide range of questions aimed at improving student's literacy skills and helping them to become fluent writers. This is a great way of drawing students in through short, inetersting texts which will whet their appetites to read the full versions.

The book is going down very well; challenging but really interesting, accessible materials that are appealing to our girls.

Malcolm Fairweather, Oakham School - 4 Sep 2009
The best English text for that year group that I have seen.

Helen Gillard, St George's School For Girls - 7 Aug 2009
I am really pleased to find a coursebook which is rigorous, challenging and full of interesting extracts from worthwhile texts.

Theresa Dickens, Cranbrook School - 4 Mar 2009
'Very positive, a really useful text with challenging tasks and a really interesting variety of texts. Very likely to buy a set if budget stretches that far!'

James Breen, Wellington College - 4 Mar 2009
'The beauty of a textbook of this kind is that it keeps the pupil and teacher away from the slavery of set books and syllabuses. There is a serendipitous variety here which is a sheer delight. The exercises are testing and require the highest standards of critical response.'

John Peters, formerly Head of English at Charterhouse and St Catherine's School, Bramley - 30 Jan 2009
'Reading', says the compiler of this volume, 'is the backbone of English'. By that she means not just books, but newspapers, magazines, reports, internet sites etc., and the range of the extracts reflects this diversity in creative and illuminating ways. It is an exciting resource book for English teachers, but also for all those fascinated by the written word, for teachers of sociology, PSHE and citizenship. Each chapter is an exciting voyage of discovery, the students being encouraged to learn new words, to spell them correctly, and to use words in inventive and imaginative ways. The range of extracts from books is rich and diverse, and when I trialled parts of the material with my Year 9 form their response was enthusiastic. Much of the material could profitably be used with Year 10 students, and I commend this anthology heartily and unreservedly.
